There are many different opinions on what constitutes good graphic design. Of course, depending on your specific goals and needs you may find that your good graphic design wouldn't work for another company or website. Always consider your own individual specifications, and pay attention to a few of the following guidelines to ensure you end up with a great match.

One thing you want to achieve with your graphic design is an eye catching look. You don't want to be too bland or plain, or else you'll just blend in with hundreds and thousands of different websites. So you want to be unique, appealing and eye-catching and you want to stand out from the crowd in this way.

Additionally, your graphic design should fit in with your overall brand and identity. You want your website to match the image of your business that you have honed and developed in other areas. If you have a brand new company, then the brand you are working on creating should still be consistently projected between your website and all other outlets. This consistency in image and brand is key, and it's an important element of what constitutes high quality graphic design for a particular website.

Also remember that clean is better than cluttered when it comes to graphic design. That means you shouldn't be trying to do too much with your graphics and design. You want to be eye catching, as mentioned above, but you don't want to try so hard to do this that you end up overwhelming the senses, confusing people or turning them off.

Avoid extremely bright colors that hurt the eyes and contrasting color schemes that can also make things hard to read. When dealing with graphic design for a website, the simpler the better in most cases, as long as you still find a way to look good and differentiate yourselves. When in doubt, opt for a design that does by more by doing less. In other words, don't hurt yourself with an intense graphic design and choose something that's pleasing to the eyes, clean and well designed.

Finally, remember that your website has a purpose. You are trying to accomplish something, whether it's simply more brand recognition, or whether it's directly producing sales or finding new prospects. Whatever you aim to do, your graphic design has to match that. Your graphics should fit in with the overall flow of your website, and should help lead visitors down the path that you want them to take.

If you follow all of the above advice you should be able to end up with graphic design that will help you achieve your goals on all fronts. You want to be eye catching and you want to project a consistent image. However you also want to keep things clean and strive not to overwhelm or turn off any visitors. Additionally, graphic design should help you directly accomplish your goals, regardless of what they are. Remember all of this, and your graphic design will serve to be a major asset for your company.
